Heather Delia White is the Office Administrator for the Family Defense Center. She studied Political Sociology at the University of Chicago and University of New Orleans, during which time she worked as a Community Organizer with ACORN and ACORN Fair Housing. She completed an Honors Thesis at the University of New Orleans in 2003, examining why pediatric lead poisoning was overlooked locally as a public health issue, drawing on outreach work she completed for the Louisiana Environmental Justice Project.

 

Cy Pres Fellowship Attorney

Melissa Staas is the Family Defense Center Cy Pres Fellow. Melissa received her J.D., magna cum laude, from Loyola University Chicago School of Law in May, 2007, where she was the Editor-in-Chief of the Children's Legal Rights Journal. Prior to attending law school, she gained valuable experience as a grant-writer with Centro San Bonifacio (a grassroots, not-for-profit organization in Chicago, IL) and coordinator with Disability Services at the University of Minnesota. Melissa received her bachelor of arts degrees in Psychology and Women's Studies from the University of Minnesota.

 

 

Staff Attorney

Alison McIntire is the Family Defense Center Staff Attorney. Prior to joining the FDC, she spent two years defending indigent juvenile and adult clients as an assistant public defender in Virginia. She has worked on numerous social justice issues, including legislative policy related to human trafficking and affirmative plaintiff civil rights litigation. She received her law degree, cum laude, from Suffolk University Law School, where she served as editor of the Suffolk Transnational Law Review, and her bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia. She is also fluent in Spanish.

 

Law Clerks

Sarah Waxman is a law student at the University of Chicago, where she also received her B.A. in Spanish Language and Literature in 1999. Prior to returning to law school in 2005, she was the Legal Services Program Director for Latinos Progresando, a Chicago non-profit legal immigration services agency, where she gained experience in immigration law, development work, legal research and writing, and direct service provision. Michelle LaGrotta is a law student at Loyola University where she participates in the ChildLaw program. She received her B.A. in Psychology from Loyola in 2004. In 2006, she also worked as a law clerk at the Cook County Public Defender's Office Juvenile Civil Division. Read more...

PEP Nights are a chance for parents to meet other parents who have had DCFS, juvenile court, or other child welfare system involvement in their families and want to work with the FDC to advocate for change.
